June 2nd: Italian Republic Day

A day that forever changed Italy’s history

Every year, on June 2nd, Italians celebrate Republic Day – one of the country’s most important national holidays. But what makes this date so meaningful?

The origins: The 1946 Referendum

After the end of World War II and the fall of the fascist regime, Italy stood at a historic crossroads. The country had been ravaged by war and dictatorship, and a new democratic beginning was desperately needed.

On June 2nd and 3rd, 1946, a national referendum was held to decide Italy’s future form of government: Monarchy or Republic?

  • Over 28 million Italians were called to vote.

  • For the first time ever, women were allowed to vote in a national election.

  • The result was historic: the Republic won with 54.3% of the vote.

  • The monarchy was abolished, and the royal House of Savoy was exiled.

The Birth of the Italian Republic

June 2nd, 1946 marks the official birth of the Italian Republic. It was a moment of collective will, when the people chose to shape a new state based on democracy, freedom, and equality.

Shortly afterward, a Constituent Assembly was elected to draft the new Italian Constitution, which came into force on January 1st, 1948. This document still forms the foundation of the Republic today.

How Italians celebrate June 2nd

Republic Day is commemorated every year with official state ceremonies, including:

  • A military parade in Rome, along the Via dei Fori Imperiali, attended by the President of the Republic

  • The laying of a laurel wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria

  • The Quirinal Palace – the President’s official residence – is open to the public

But beyond official events, June 2nd is a time of national unity and reflection on Italy’s civic values. And, as with any Italian holiday, it's also a time to gather around the dining table.
