Sugo all'arrabbiata is the spicy tomato sauce of the Roman tradition: tomato, dried chili and garlic, cooked with olive oil. This one is made by De Carlo, a family of olive growers and millers in Bitritto, ten kilometres from Bari, whose work with olive oil goes back to the 1600s. The recipe is short: tomato pulp makes up 92% of the jar, with 4% extra virgin olive oil and 1.4% dried chili.

It is ready to use: warm it and toss it with freshly drained pasta. It also works on pizza, on warm crostini and with vegetables.

An out-of-the-ordinary treat

These crunchy and light Italian cookies are unusual in texture, which makes them out-of-the-ordinary. They are also heavily flavored, one person in my family thought it was cherry, the name refers to almond flavor, but they are in fact made from apricot pits.

I loved the tin container that they come in and the fact that each is individually wrapped in plastic and then a decorative paper wrapping. It makes each little cookie something to focus on.
