Frutta martorana is the marzipan fruit of Sicily. According to tradition it takes its name from the Martorana convent in Palermo, where the nuns first shaped almond paste into fruit, and in Sicily it is the traditional sweet of All Souls' Day (November 2). This box comes from Dolciaria La Fenice, a pastry maker in Reitano, in the province of Messina: marzipan made with 33% almonds, shaped and colored like fruit and finished with a glossy glaze.
Serve a few pieces at room temperature with espresso or a glass of sweet dessert wine, or bring the box to the table at the end of a meal. It also makes a colorful gift.
